Santos is battling blocked heat exchangers, failed subsea valves, and faulty safety doors 285km north of Darwin so it can reap the reward of high gas prices in Asia.
In WA, the east coast power utility AGL retails gas and owns the gas-fired Kwinana Swift power station.
The 250 MW station is set to open in 2029, when coal-fired generation ends in South West WA, but new gas turbines are increasingly hard to get.
